Record breaking week for eBay UK as shoppers find what they want for Christmas

More than 5 million shoppers logged onto eBay.co.uk yesterday, in what has been a record breaking week for the online marketplace in the lead up to ‘Super Sunday’.

Clothing, shoes and accessories made up eight out of the top 10 most popular items bought yesterday. DVDs maintained its top spot from last year as the favourite gift to purchase on ‘Super Sunday, with women’s shoes in second spot and CDs in third.

eBay sellers played their part in the UK’s export-led recovery, with international sales up 11% on 2009 as savvy Christmas shoppers across the globe visited the site.

Jody Ford, Director of SME Businesses, eBay UK commented: “The festive spirit has well and truly arrived! Online shopping continues to go from strength to strength as people look for choice and value from the comfort of their own homes and it’s encouraging to see sales up so considerably, despite the tough economic climate. We tend to see a sharp rise in sales on the first Sunday in December as people start to think about their Christmas shopping list, although this year’s cold snap has clearly led to even more people choosing to shop without the hassle of the high-street.”

Founded in 1999, eBay.co.uk is the UK’s number 1 e-commerce site, providing a platform for over 17.7m unique visitors per month to buy and sell new, unique and used items in a fun and easy way. Sellers of all sizes, including 160,000 registered small businesses and over 30 high-street retailers use eBay.co.uk to reach the UK’s largest online shopping audience.
