The Rise of the SDA… Social Displays of Affection show that Valentine’s Day is all about the receiving and not the giving

Have you ever waited until 6pm when most people are online post-work to post a picture of your new gift?

  • Have you ever waited until 6pm when most people are online post-work to post a picture of your new gift?
  • Are you guilty of putting a filter on your present to make it look even more beautiful?
  • Have you ever tagged a friend in a picture of your gift because you know they’ll be jealous?
  • Well you’re not alone as 1 in 5 of us admit to being ‘SDA’ offenders, bragging about gifts online!

Social Displays of Affection (SDAs) on social media sites have overtaken PDAs as the biggest bugbear of singletons and couples alike. Just over a quarter of Brits (26%) admit that seeing their friends gush about how much they love their partners on social media is top of the annoying list on Valentine’s Day. Whilst posting boastful a picture of gifts online turns one in three females into the green-eyed monster.

Research from eBay, one of the world's largest marketplaces, shows that 38% of Brits feel under pressure to show their gifts off online. 24% of women admit that they hint for thoughtful presents simply for bragging rights.

When it comes to Valentine’s Day gifting eBay.co.uk* reveals that a present from an unwanted admirer is the most embarrassing, and receiving flowers at work a close second. Over half of women (55%) state that ‘something thoughtful’ is what they want the most.

eBay’s research also revealed the top 5 gifts. It seems us girls are fairly easy to please

Top 5 Valentine’s Day Gifts:

  1. Perfume (50%)
  2. Jewellery (46%)
  3. Music (19%)
  4. Handbag (17%)
  5. Lingerie (15%)

The research goes on to reveal that the average Brit will spend £30 on their partner with men spending an average of 48% more than women. Men will splash out around £37 on a gift for the lady in their life, compared to £25 spent by women. eBay has seen a steep increase in sales of lingerie (59%) from brands and retailers available on the site including the likes of Figleaves, Debenhams and House of Fraser. Presents such as Links of London charm bracelets have also shot up 49% over the last couple of weeks in the lead up to the romantic day.

eBay spokesperson, Laura Wilkinson-Rea says; “Give your loved one something to boast about this Valentine’s. Whether you’re looking for a loved ones favourite scent; accessories to go with a date night outfit or something that simply says I love you, eBay.co.uk has a fantastic selection of gifts to chose from.”
